Thanks to a proclamation made by Thomas Vilsack, the Secretary of Agriculture of the United States of America, we are celebrating National Farmers Market Week.
From August 5-11, Americans are encouraged to celebrate and appreciate our country's agricultural producers nationwide. In his July 13th proclamation, Vilsack clearly notes that farmers markets "play a key role in developing local and regional food systems that support the sustainability of family farms, revitalize communities, and provide opportunities for farmers and consumers to interact..." This year marks the 13th Annual National Farmers Market Week.
Here in Washington State, we too are celebrating and proudly boast 160 farmers markets featuring some of the best apples, berries, stone fruits, and seafoods in the world. To celebrate our state's farmers markets, I'm busting out of Seattlethis weekendand heading to the other side of the Cascade Mountains to the Kittitas County Farmers Market in ruralEllensburg. I plan to stock up on some warm weather favorites, such as big beefytomatoes, peaches, apricots, cucumbers and maybe even some melons!
